What exactly is "Wellness" anyway?

Cozy Leaf tea - Designed for "Wellness", Delicious to Sip ...

I have people ask "But what exactly does wellness mean anyway!?" I use the word very intentionally as it means so much more than just "a healthy option" or "good for you".

But let me explain what "Wellness" means!! Wellness stands for a way of life, a habit, an overall mindset as you look into what you do on a daily basis! So it does not mean that you do something once and it qualifies as wellness.

I love these wonderful definitions...

  • the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.
  • the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.
  • an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.
  • The condition of good physical and mental health, especially when maintained by proper diet, exercise, and habits.

The term "Wellness" was hardly ever used even as recent as the 1960s. It has gained popularity over the past 20-30 years with it being a pretty common term over the last 10 years. I think this has more to do with the fact that there are more "unhealthy" options available at our fingertips. The first fast food chain was A&W which opened in 1919 and McDonalds didn't come along until the 1940's. But think of life before that! I love to think about what life must have been like 100 years ago! You could not swing through the drive-through line and get anything. You had to grow it, raise it, and make it yourself!! The first  grocery store wasn't even around until 1916. It was a Piggly Wiggly in Tennessee! Now there were Mercantiles and small shops before that, but nothing compared to the convenience we have at our fingertips today! Here on our little homestead, we have had all sorts of animals over the years. But the chickens are a great example and a front row seat to the length of time it takes to realistically produce "food". We hatch baby chicks and raise them for 20+ weeks before they even get to the age that they will lay eggs. A lot of variables can risk their lives for months before any "food" is produced! But it is all about preparing and being patient. Fast food chains and grocery stores have definitely changed the convenience factor of our food and they have also changed the wellness aspect of our food (unfortunately not always in a good way). This just shows that we need to make a conscious effort toward wellness on a day to day basis.

But wellness is also about BALANCE! One persons physical and mental choices may stress out someone else and stress can be highly destructive to your overall well-being! We have chosen to have farm animals in our lives because we enjoy them and they bring a constant awareness as to where our food comes from. But my sister, on the other hand, would probably have a panic attack if she even had to do the animal chores 1 time. So animals would NOT be in her wellness bucket! I have other friends who run marathons and that my friends is NOT in my wellness bucket!

Fill your bucket!! Be conscious of your choices and do what is best for your life! Wellness takes all of these variables into account. It is an overall conscious view of the health of your body and what it takes to produce the food and drinks that we put into our bodies. Wellness is a daily conscious effort to support the body through healthy lifestyle choices that work for YOU with the future in mind.

"Designed for Wellness, Delicious to Sip" - shows that I have created my tea blends to be something that you add to your wellness bucket, a daily routine and a conscious effort to support your body! Know what is in your tea and let it nourish your body! I bet you will never drink tea the same way again!
